Kip- Captain – Sunapee Cruises

Sunapee Cruises and Lake Sunapee holds a special place in our heart. Matter of fact, the Lakes Region town inspired us to create the blog in the first place to tell the history of this quaint town that people from Boston and New York used to take trains and steamships to visit. (See our first blog for history.) You see, after spending some years in New York, we were thrilled to find a place where the air is cleaner, the water is clearer and there’s magic in the trees if you haven’t heard!

NewEnglandBlogger spoke exclusively to Tim Fenton, manager at Sunapee Cruises about the up and coming 2013 season that will kick off Memorial Day Weekend on the lake, his 2 boats and the return of everyone’s favorite area dinner boat the MV Kearsarge.

So here’s the BIG NEWS! We are glad to report that the MV Kearsarge the floating restaurant will have its inaugural cruise Memorial Day Weekend on Monday, May 27th departing from the town dock at Sunapee Harbor at 6:30pm. Yes, the lakes region landmark that had taken on some water and damage as reported by WCBS-Boston and other news media outlets back in early January is being repaired and will be ready!

Susnapee Cruises

Whether you are a fan of the charm of the lake, the boat or the roast beef dinner buffet, fear not! Your MV Kearsarge is returning! The Dinner boat will sail Weekends thru Father’s Day at 6:30pm for it’s two-hour dinner tour. Then every day EXCEPT Monday thru Labor Day and then weekends only through October.

Sunapee Cruises

The MV Mt. Sunapee II a two-hour narrative boat tour will  have  its inaugural cruise on Saturday, May 25th at 2pm. These cruises will run Memorial Day Weekend on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 2pm and then Weekends only through Father’s Day. Then daily through Labor Day Weekend when it returns to just weekends through October.

We encourage you to take the drive from wherever you are in New England or beyond! You’ll be glad you did!  Take one or both tours! Walk the quaint harbor. Have a drink or a bite to eat at The Anchorage. Get ice cream at The Quack Shop a popular spot, located along the Sugar River. Visit the near by shops like The Harborside Trading Company, The Wild Goose Country Store and Deck Dock. Take a ride into the nearby towns of New London and Newport.

Depending on where you live make it a day trip or spend a night or  two or longer! Rentals are available along the lake or nearby.

Oh yeah, make sure you hold on to your hat on the boat! ENJOY!

The Anchorage at Sunapee Harbor is just the place for you!

The Anchorage

Yes, we have to admit this is one place we visit several times  every year and we recently dined there.  We had the Harbor Scampi which is a combination of clams and fresh fish in a white wine, garlic, herb butter & lemon sauce served over pasta. For dessert we had the Chocolate Cobbler brownie  with ice cream and chocolate sauce.

The Anchorage is located right on the water, nestled in Sunapee Harbor. They have great food a friendly staff and spectacular views! It’s a great place for drinks and appetizers, lunch, dinner or late night entertainment which is offered on weekends on Friday and Saturday nights starting at 9pm.

Roadhouse at The Anchorage

The night we were there ROADHOUSE a local favorite was playing classic Rock.

A late night menu is offered and the Anchorage also does catering for your special event! Mondays – Kids 12 and under eat for FREE! 1 Free Kids Meal with the purchase of an entrée. It’s also MUG NIGHT!

The Anchorage also has its place in Rock and Roll History as the place that Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler met Joe Perry. As the story goes…they both summered in the area in their youth. Joe worked at The Anchorage one summer and had made some French Fries and Steven Tyler just had to go see who made the most delicious french fries he ever had!

Lake Sunapee Cruises: I LOVE IT HERE!

Lake Sunapee

New Hampshire

Sunapee Cruises

OK…This is NO Secret!! “I LOVE IT HERE” One of my favorite places is Lake Sunapee.

One of my favorite things to do at the lake is take the narrative boat tour on the MV MT Sunapee II and the dinner cruise on the MV Kearsarge with Sunapee Cruises.  This lake and these boat rides feature one of the most picturesque and best done narrative boat rides I have ever been on.  And yes, every year I have to experience this at least once…several times if I am lucky.

Sunapee Cruises

Captain Kip Brown does a wonderful job with the narration and he and the Fenton’s that own Sunapee Cruises should be very proud of their scenic tours.  We highly recommend you take a day trip or a long weekend and enjoy what Lake Sunapee area has to offer. Please see our other posts on Lake Sunapee and the history of Steamships on Lake Sunapee!

Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire

DREAM ON WITH ME!

One of my favorite places is Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire.  There’s just something about it.  The air is cleaner, the water is clearer and it is just purely breathtaking, relaxing and rejuvenating! This is a magical  place with a unique history!  Native American  Algonquin Indians called the lake “Soo-Nipi” or “Wild Goose Waters” for the many geese that passed over the lake for migration.

The Lake also resembles a goose in flight with the birds head at the harbor area when seen from an aerial view or from nearby Mt. Sunapee. The lake is also surrounded by 3 towns incorporating the villages of Sunapee Harbor and Georges Mill, Newbury, and New London.

Lake Sunapee is listed under the “1,000 Places to See Before you Die“.  So let’s explore together and see why!

Each season is special at Lake Sunapee whether it’s Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter.  You can enjoy the beach, fishing, boating, water-skiing, water sports, boat rides and pure relaxation. In  the fall there is great leaf peeping and in the Winter there’s ice fishing, and ice sailing on the lake and skiing at nearby Mount Sunapee.

Sunapee Harbor is the hot spot of the area that features a boat launch as well as several small shops, a deli, ice cream stand and other historic landmarks.  One of the lakes favorite attractions is Sunapee Cruises They offer a narrative boat tour from Memorial Day Weekend through Columbus Day on the MV Mt. Sunapee II as well as dinner cruises on the MV Kearsarge.  This is a 2 hour buffet dinner with the captain as your guide and offers 2 levels of enclosed dining. A full bar is also available with dinner cruises.  Both the sightseeing tour as well as the dinner cruise are very enjoyable and memorable experiences.  Dinner Cruises are available from May through October.  Charter boats for special occasions and weddings are also available.

Another favorite stop here is The Anchorage Restaurant  reopens for the season May 18th and serves Lunch and Dinner and has outdoor dining. The menu includes everything from appetizers, soups, chowders, salads, sandwiches and more.  There is also musical entertainment Thursday – Saturday nights.  This is also the noted restaurant that  Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler met Joe Perry some 4o+ years ago. There are several inns and cottages as well as homes that are available for rentals.  Lake Sunapee has some of the most beautiful lake houses you will ever find. Some of the prestigous names in history have had homes their including the Colgate’s and the Coleman’s. To find out more information visit LakeSunapeenh.org
