The 5th Annual Nantucket Book Festival takes center stage on Nantucket  Friday, June 17th – Sunday June 19th, 2016. A stellar lineup is planned with 25 presenting authors, and 40+ local authors who will be displaying and selling their books in the Atheneum tent on Saturday.  This is your chance  to get up close and personal with your favorite authors.

Eighty percent of the events are FREE.  Ticketed events for authors include a Friday Morning Breakfast, Lunch at Nantucket Yacht Club, A Saturday Morning Breakfast, Lunch at Straight Warf Restaurant and other events  Now’s the time to purchase tickets for the weekend events. This is the time to experience award winning authors at a three day event. Book lovers can gather at different Nantucket venues for a series of author readings, panel discussions, and social events that provide opportunities for casual conversations between writers and readers.

Sebastian Junger primarily writes about people with dangerous jobs, from firefighting to commercial fishing, which lead to his first book and New York Times best-seller “The Perfect Storm”. The corresponding documentary Restrepo was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and won the Grand Jury Prize for a domestic documentary at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010. Junger’s next book “Tribe” (May, 2016) takes a critical look at post-traumatic stress disorder and the many challenges today’s returning veterans face in modern society.

Participants  in this year’s Nantucket Book Festival include 2015 Man Booker Prize Winner Marlon James “A Brief History of Seven Killings”, the first  Caribbean author to win the esteemed prize since V.S. Naipaul.  Legendary Broadcaster Diane Rehm who’s latest book “On My Own” is a deeply personal and moving account of the long drawn-out death of her husband from Parkinson’s and her struggle to reconstruct her life without him. Rehm, began her radio career in the early 70’s at WAMU, a NPR member station in Washington, D.C. In 1979, she began hosting WAMU’s local morning talk show, Kaleidoscope, which was renamed the Diane Rehm show in 1984. Newsweek named the show one of the most interesting talk shows in the country. In 2014, President Barack Obama presented Rehm with the National Humanities Medal .

U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins is an American phenomenon. No poet since Robert Frost has managed to combine acclaim with such broad popular appeal. His work has appeared in the New Yorker, The Paris Review and the American Scholar; he is a Guggenheim fellow and a New York Public Library “Literary Lion”. His past three collections of poems have broken sales records for poetry. His most recent book “Aimless Love: New and Selected Poems 2003-3013 is a New York Times Best Seller.

Children’s Story Time at the 2015 Nantucket Book Festival

In addition to the author presentations on Friday and Saturday, the festival will host an outdoor exhibit of local authors selling and signing their books in the Nantucket Atheneum  garden during the day on Saturday. Children’s programming will be offered in the garden, from story time for toddlers to presentations for students of all ages.

The Typewritter Rodeo, a quartet of Austin-based poets, will be on hand, writing poems on demand on any subject for all who attend. Other events include “Authors in Bars” on Saturday night and optional ticketed events including Sunday’s Author breakfast at the White Elephant as well as the “Cisco Send-Off” a Sunday afternoon wrap party at Cisco Brewers.
